New Orleans is overflowing with rich cultural flare. Which is why, for our 3 year anniversary, my husband I are heading down to the Big Easy. I’ll be sure to document the trip and show you all the fun things we did, but until then, I thought it would be fitting to do a few N’awlins themed posts.

To kick things off, I thought I would repost these photos of Lindsey and Ryan’s wedding invitations. A little New Orleans in Indy…

I’m sure you’ve all heard of theknot.com. Maybe you’re even using it to help plan/organize your wedding – I know I  did! It’s a great resource for finding wedding day inspiration. They’ve got hundreds of *quality* photos which is why I always recommend the site to my brides. As of this year, TEN:THIRTEEN design is also a vendor on their site. I feel as though I’ve come full circle with them.

In my last blog I showcased one of my new favorite color combos, green and black. I actually got my inspiration from the wedding invitation suite that I recently designed for Nicole and Ryan. Nicole had mentioned that she wanted museum chic since their wedding will be held at the Indiana State Museum. We also accented the green and black with a deep purple.

Below are a couple of shots taken by Jane Farr who did an exquisite job with the calligraphy. If you would like to see more of her work, visit her blog! She’s wonderful to work with and, obviously, very talented!

I was so fortunate to work with Ryan and Lindsey Tucker (who tied the knot July 10) on their save the dates, wedding invitations, rehearsal dinner invites and day of pieces. Lindsey came to me with idea of creating a New Orleans themed affair. Of course, I loved it (and everything that has to do with that enchanting city).

We started with save the dates. She wanted these to be more fun and playful. I decided to create a jazzy New Orleans poster look. The rehearsal dinner invitations also had a similar look and feel. (Photo by Jennifer Driscoll)

However, for the wedding invitations and day of pieces, Lindsey wanted to play up the classic New Orleans style complete with golds, browns and silvers. And of course we had to throw in some  fleur-de-lis.The invitations were wrapped with gold ribbon and layered upon brown and silver paper. (I’ll try to get photos of these soon!)

Luckily, Lindsey and Ryan booked Jen and Kurtis Bowersock (of Bowersock Photography) to capture the days events. They were kind enough to let me post some photos from the wedding and reception (including the programs, table numbers/street signs, escort cards, specialty drink cards, menus and favor box stickers that I designed). What a beautiful wedding (and gorgeous bride)!!!

I’m sure a majority of you think that I only design custom wedding invitations…and for the most part, you’re right. That is what I spend a majority of my time doing! Of course, friends and family members, as well as formal couples, are always asking for personalized invitations or stationery.

Last year my wonderful husband celebrated his 30th birthday. I planned a huge surprise party complete with stellar invitations. Matt, being a huge golf fan, made the theme of the party a no brainer. Check out the invites!

Several of my former brides have contacted me to do birth announcements/baby shower invitations. I love that, once again, I get the privilege to be a part of another monumental moment in their lives! Here are a few samples of those…

And then, of course, there are bridal showers and bachelorette parties!

I’ve had several brides ask, “What’s the difference between and a wedding announcement and a wedding invitation?” Well, I’m here to explain…

A wedding announcement is just that – a card announcing the wedding of Mr. & Mrs. Perfect. Many couples getting married want to announce their special occasion, but aren’t having a large wedding that can accommodate everyone. They wont have to worry about those receiving an announcement mistaking it for an invitation since they should be sent out the day of the wedding or shortly after.

A wedding invitation is a card inviting guests to the wedding of Mr. & Mrs. Perfect. Although the same card can be used as an announcement or an invitation, there are distinct uses of wording that can transform it from one to the other. For example, a wedding announcement would read:

Ms. Barbara Hansen and Mr. Peter Hansen
have the honour of announcing
the marriage of their daughter

Jacqueline Anne
to
Matthew Joseph Bilskie

Saturday, the thirteenth of October
Two Thousand and Seven
Roberts Park United Methodist Church
Indianapolis, Indiana

Whereas a wedding invitation would read:

Ms. Barbara Hansen and Mr. Peter Hansen
request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter

Jacqueline Anne
to
Matthew Joseph Bilskie

Saturday, the thirteenth of October
Two Thousand and Seven
Roberts Park United Methodist Church
Indianapolis, Indiana

That one little line can transform the entire piece! Below is an announcement I created for Heidi and Brad, who were fortunate enough to have their small and intimate wedding in Hawaii.

There are numerous invitation shops, both online and off, who claim they will give you a one-of-a-kind wedding invitation. It can be very overwhelming. Typically, their idea of  one-of-a-kind means that you pick out the design from a set of pre-designed invitations, and they’ll print your name, date and location. This is not the personal touch that most couples are looking for.

My work is completely personalized for the client. Invitations are created from scratch based upon the details we (you -the bride- and I) discuss (colors, themes, monograms, ribbons, locations, etc.) during our initial consultation. I work closely with each couple to make sure that their vision is carried throughout the design. If they are is unsure of what they want, I can also help steer them in the right direction.

Essentially, by working with TEN:THIRTEEN design, you are hiring your own private designer who is devoted to creating the stationery of your dreams.

You may be wondering what route to take when it comes to choosing your wedding stationery (or any other type of custom correspondence). Most of you will go online and search out places like Rexcraft®, Carlson Craft® or Wedding Paper Divas (all of which are very popular and have great selections). You may also visit local stationery shops and look through catalogs of invitations. More than likely, you will find something that catches your eye, but be sure to ask, “Do these come in my color?” or “Can I get matching programs and menus?” Odds are you will find something close, but it might not be exactly what you’re looking for. With custom invitations, they can be whatever you want them to be. You can choose the color, font, layout, etc. However, the main concern with custom invitations is the cost. Not only are you paying for the end product (your wedding stationery or correspondence), you are also paying for the time (anywhere from 40 to 80 hours) and creativity that goes into their design. I always recommend reviewing your budget before deciding which route to take.
